Main grants programme news

The South West continues to attract large numbers of applications for our main grants programmes larger, relatively speaking, than other regions. While around half of the applications we received are currently successful, two factors suggest that the competition is going to get tougher:

  • Numbers of applications in this region have been rising steadily since the Autumn
  • Our budget for main grants is forecast to drop. Some time ago the Board estimated that the 2000/2001 budget would be 269m, down from 392m in the current year.

One consequence of the large number of applications we are receiving is a backlog in the assessment process. Please be aware that at the moment main grants applications can take six months, and sometimes more, to process. We are working hard to reduce this.

Statistically speaking

Community Involvement / Poverty and Disadvantage Programmes

In our main grants programmes since the beginning of the financial year we have made 238 awards worth 21,000,411. The average grant size has been 88,237, and the success rate 48%. 18% of applications failed at the first stage of assessment.

Millennium festival awards for all

The joint lottery distributor programme for local groups has now made over 900 awards worth almost 3m since the first announcement in August 1999. Priority is given to groups with an income under 15,000. The success rate is currently over 50%, and applications will be accepted until June. News of what will follow this successful scheme will be announced in due course.

Applications on disk

Yes, the application form will soon be available on floppy disk. Trials are currently taking place - watch this space.

In anticipation, we are building up our database of organisations of and for disabled people so that we can spread the good news when it happens. Any offers of information you can share to help us with this will be very much appreciated.

Community Champions

Do you know about the DfEEs Community Champions Fund? This will support individuals active in their communities by developing their skills, and encourage regeneration by supporting individuals who drive community projects. First applications must be in by 1 March. More information from Roger Davies Associates, email [email protected] or fax 01722 501610.

The Evaluation Trust

The Charities Board has funded The Evaluation Trust to offer smaller voluntary and community organisations free training and help to set up monitoring and self evaluation systems, and free consultancy to undertake some evaluation work. Bigger organisations will get initial advice free of charge. So if you know of small organisations particularly which might be helped to develop through this, do get more information from Sarah del Tufo (0118 966 4864), or Lesley Bluett (01749 671179).
