26 November 1997 Christmas comes early to charities in Rhondaa Cynon TafThe National Lottery Charities Board’s Small grants scheme has given local charities and community groups a reason to celebrate this winter. In the latest round of awards in the Torfaen area, the two recipients for grants for office equipment were South Gwent Breast Cancer Support Group which received £1,199 and Torfaen Community Enterprises which received £3,727. The grants are aimed at groups in immediate need of money for particular projects, ranging from £500 to £5,000. In this latest round a total of £118,381 has been awarded to 36 organisations throughout Wales. Tom Jones, Chair of the Board’s Wales Committee said, "It is very heartening to see the energy and time put in by community groups to improve the various aspects of life in their communities throughout Wales and to be able to offer practical support with the Small grants scheme. Obviously there are many other deserving groups and projects throughout Wales and I wish to encourage these groups to make a New Year’s resolution to help their cause by applying for a grant in 1998! As for past unsuccessful applicants, I would encourage them to try again. The application arrangements for the Small grants are very ‘user-friendly’ and are not tied to deadlines. Our aim is to get funding quickly to the communities and projects in need but obviously, on the way, we have to clear some paperwork to ensure the money will be well-managed and used to the maximum benefit." Groups in Wales requiring information on the scheme or an application form can call 0345 273273 for an application form in either Welsh or English. |
