£5 million for Scotland’s voluntary sector – and it’s no lottery!

Lottery funding worth more than £5 million to voluntary and community organisations in Scotland is announced today by the National Lottery Charities Board.

Forty-one organisations will benefit from grants which range from £7,568 for the Springburn Stroke Club in Glasgow, to £453,529 for Queen’s Cross Workspace Ltd., also in Glasgow.

Scotland-wide organisations which benefit include Writability, a project which provides services for writers with disability. Their grant of £29,318 will give writers access to professional scripts and tuition.

The grants are made under the Board’s Community Involvement and Poverty and Disadvantage programmes.

In order to increase the transparency of its grant-making, the Charities Board recently published its grant assessment manual on its web-site, the first lottery distributor to do so. Applicants now have the opportunity to see the criteria against which applications for funding are judged.

Chair of the Scotland Committee, Kay Hampton, said

"Taken together with the feedback which we now give to unsuccessful applicants, this initiative has opened up the Charities Board’s grant-making quite considerably.

" People sometimes think getting a grant is a bit of a lottery in itself and we want to dispel that idea by being quite clear about what makes a good application. It’s not a draw and there are no hidden criteria."

The Charities Board’s website can be accessed on www.nlcb.org.uk

The National Lottery Charities Board began making grants to the voluntary sector in 1995. Today’s announcement brings the total paid out in Scotland to £165 million.

Ends.
