5 August 1999 New grants to Local Charities (2)The National Lottery Charities Board will today award £454,633 to five groups in Somerset to help them make a lasting difference to their communities. The grants form part of a £3,264,232 range of awards to 33 groups by the Charities Board’s South West Regional Office, under its Community involvement, Poverty and disadvantage and Small grants programmes. Charities Board Regional Awards Committee Chair Brian Tanner said: "Our grants are assessed and awarded in the South West for local voluntary groups. "We want to help groups in the most deprived areas to improve their communities - if you would like to talk about how your group could apply for a grant, please call us on 01392 849701." Groups awarded grants in Somerset today include: Volunteering in Mendip will get a much needed boost thanks to the award of £168,022 to Mendip Council for Voluntary Service, based in Shepton Mallet, which will cover the costs of establishing a volunteer bureau. The committee of Misterton Village Hall will be celebrating their award of £60,879. The Charities Board distributes money raised by the National Lottery to charities and voluntary and community groups. The Board distributes grants to help meet the needs of those at greatest disadvantage in society and to improve the quality of life of the community. 2. The Board receives 4.7p of every pound spent on National Lottery tickets or 16 2/3 per cent of all the money that goes to the ‘good causes’. 3. Nearly 11,000 new jobs have been created as a result of Charities Board awards. |
